Hateful rhetoric and the future of political discourse
The attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona and the associated murders are causing people to place blame on various individuals and potential causes. Rep. Gifford's congressional district was among those identified in the infamous political battleground map created by Sarah Palin's political action committee last year. This has led many to question whether Palin's map and the increasing role of vitriolic rhetoric in our political debates led to the tragedy on January 8, 2011.
This is the wrong question to be asking. I discuss what I believe to be the more pertinent issue in this Op-Ed in the Salt Lake Tribune.
